I heard the comment recently that in a post GFC environment trading shares had become “a poor man’s game”. Not what an enthusiastic investor new to the equity market planning on a diversified twenty stock portfolio wants to hear, but interesting to explore.

Over the last few years broking has changed. Post the GFC some clients, particularly retirees, took too much of a beating and started looking for something safer than choosing individual ‘stocks and shares’. Initially this call for less risk was met by bonds and term deposits, but as interest rates fell their yields evaporated. Then came hybrids.
