The 500-stock index advanced 0.6%, while the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.9%.
The Dow Jones added 82 points, or 0.2%.

CSL results on Tuesday were OK but not great. Earnings came in line with expectations while profit beat thanks to cost reductions.
