The Top 10 Articles of 2020

2020 is coming to an end. What a year it has been. It has been described as a hot mess, inside a dumpster fire, inside a slow-motion train wreck. Obviously, little has gone to plan. If someone at the start of 2020 was to tell you that you would spend the year inside your house, unable to see your loved ones, hoarding toilet paper and binge-watching Netflix, would you have believed them? As human beings go, we’re an optimistic bunch. True to form, we have made the best of the situation. That includes the team at Marcus Today who have endeavoured to continue bringing the analysis, insight and levity (where appropriate) to help you get the best out of your investments. Let’s take a look back on this memorable year by highlighting our top 10 articles of the last 12 months.

#10. How to use a model portfolio

The Marcus Today Model Portfolios – Growth and Income – are the core of what we do. They are where all of our analysis (both fundamental and technical), reading, discussions, debate and decision-making are crystallised into actionable outcomes. How to use a model portfolio

#9. Buy, Hold, Sell - CSL Limited (CSL)

CSL (ASX: CSL) is a high-quality business, the company affirmed its FY20 guidance supported by strong flu demand and lower R&D spend but is unlikely to provide an outlook on FY21 due to the impact of the pandemic. A key issue for FY21 remains the second wave of the pandemic in the US, and the potential for continued disruption of plasma collection which will impact earnings in 2H21. BUY HOLD SELL - CSL (ASX: CSL)

#8. Education Sell in May and go away

Marcus writes about the “Sell in May and Go Away” concept every May and makes the regular comment that the only reason this idiom survives is probably because it rhymes, people remember it because it rhymes, it persists because it rhymes - or is there simply method in the madness? Since 1936 your chances of making money in the market in the six months ahead of May have been over double your chances of making money in the six months following May. #7. 20 Ways to Beat the Herd

#5. Buy, Hold, Sell - Electric Optic Systems (EOS)

After writing this article Henry became a de-facto expert on Electro Optic Systems (ASX: EOS). They are a supplier of laser optic sights to the US, NATO and Australian military and counter-drone technology. They have recently made an acquisition - Audacy - that will see the company enter space. The company has cutting edge laser guidance systems allowing remote access targeting. It also has communication systems and now space capabilities. It is Australia’s largest defence exporter (according to EOS) although we suspect Austal (ASB) may have something to say about that. Henry put a speculative buy recommendation on it, was it correct? Buy Hold Sell: Electro Optic Systems (ASX: EOS) -

Back in February, Marcus and the team were comparing Afterpay (ASX: APT) to the WW1 trenches. How has the stock shaped up in the last 11 months? Sell now don't pay later APT (ASX: APT)

#2 Buy, Hold, Sell – AFTERPAY (APT)

#1 Buy, Hold, Sell - MACQUARIE GROUP (MQG)

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent market volatility have seen scores of Australians jump into the stock market, enticed by the opportunity no doubt. The Marcus Today team is often asked ‘if we could only buy one stock’ or ‘what stock should I buy first’, what would it be? Typically, the answer comes back, Macquarie Group (ASX: MQG).
